English Language Movies Set in Japan

Watching movies in English is a great way to learn how to speak the language. That's because they're fun to watch and they teach things like pronunciation, useful expressions, and how English is used in "real" situations.

Not every English language film is set in an English speaking country. Here are a few successful films that are set in Japan.



Lost in Translation (2003)
Bill Murray plays a movie star who is staying in Tokyo. Unhappy with his life at home, he becomes friends with a younger American woman, played by Scarlett Johansson, who is staying at his hotel. As they become friends, they help each other with the problems in their lives.







The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Set in Tokyo, the movie is about an American teenager who crashes his car in an illegal race in the US. He's sent to Japan to live with his father so he doesn't have to go to prison. There, his friends introduce him to another kind of illegal racing, called "drifting."







The Last Samurai (2003)
The Last Samurai is the story of an American who used to be in the army, played by Tom Cruise, who is hired in 1876 to help train the Japanese army.

However, he is captured in battle by a group of samurai, whose leader is played by Ken Watanabe. Over time he begins to respect their culture and learn their ways, and even fights alongside them.
