Japanese post man Hides 24,000 pieces of mail in home 

A postman in has been found hiding nearly 24,000 pieces of mail in his home, police in Yokohama said.

Kyodo reports that the 61-year old man, who has not been named, worked for Japan post in the Seya Post Office Yokohama, Where he was in charge of deliveries. He is said to have started hiding mail in 2003. 

"It was too much of bother to deliver [the mail[, "he told the police. "I didn't want my colleagues to think I was less capable than younger people."

The man had retired but came back to work in the post office. The problem was discovered in November 2019 after an internal check.

Japan post apologized and explained that the problem went unnoticed for a long time because the man was hiding the mail in his home.

"We'll have talks withe police on the undelivered items and offer apologies to the senders and receivers as we deliver them," it said.

If the man is found guilty of breaking the law, he could go to jail for three years or have to pay 500,000 yen ($4,600), according to the BBC.

In 2018, a 33-year-old postman in Italy was arrested after police found 70 letters in his car. He is said to have told them, "I wasn't paid enough and so, I quit."
