China Locks Down Cities to Contain Virus

Chinese authorities are locking down three cities that are home to more than 18 million people. The lock down comes as part of an effort to contain a new virus that has sickened hundreds during China's busy Lunar New year travel period.

Police and soldiers guarded the train station in Wuhan, a city of 11 million, where only travelers with tickets for the last trains out were allowed to enter. Authorities also closed the airport and stopped ferry, subway and bus services, and police checked all vehicles entering the city.

Local authorities in Wuhan demanded all residents wear masks in public places, Xinhua news agency reported.

Gauden galea of the World Health Organization said that nobody has ever tried to close a city of 11 million people before, and he is not sure if the effort will work.

Authorities have announced similar plans for the nearby cities of Huanggang and Ezhou. in Huanggang, theaters, internet cafes and other entertainment centers were also ordered closed.

Close to 600 people have become sick and twenty six people have died form the virus; all of them in and around Wuhan. The oldest was 89 and the youngest was 48.

Illnesses from the newly identified coronavirus first appeared in December in Wuhan. The first cases were connected to people who worked at or visited a seafood market, which has since been closed for investigation.

other cases have been reported in the Us, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong kong. Most of the illnesses outside China involve people who were form Wuhan or had recently traveled there.

The coronavirus family includes the common cold as well as more serious illnesses, such as the SARS, which spread form China to more than a dozen countries in 2002-03 and killed about 800 people, and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, or MERS, which is thought to have come from camels.

  1. I think it sounds like.... zombie. I mean the New cornavirus.... it's like a zombie. China government doesn't want to let people outside to Wuhan. so people have no choice, they have to die or endure the virus in the Wuhan.
  2. I understand why china government locked down the city. They couldn't find a solution, and when they just let it go It can be bigger problems... like whole china people would get illnesses.
  3. but... It's too cruel. I hope as soon as possible they can find a way, and honey with ginger or cinnamon might be help.
